Maroon Kitchen Walls in Wilmington, Delaware

In the original kitchen design, the clients had maroon kitchen walls and wanted to bring that aspect into the new kitchen. In their initial consultation the homeowner’s also emphasized wanting a more open space with a better flow to accommodate this active family of four along with their two dogs. After collaborating with their designer, the decision was made for extensive structural changes: to remove the load-bearing wall separating the kitchen from the dining room, the existing kitchen pantry, the existing kitchen sliding door and window and the foyer closet reworked. Also, to add a new door access from laundry room to patio. The new design opened up the space to include the dining area, replaced the kitchen sliding door access to the back patio with an added large bay window keeping the space light and airy and closed the pocket door access to the entry hallway to extend the wall cabinetry and fit a much-needed family desk area with a cork board backsplash.

A larger island was designed to add additional counter space and seating for the family and their guests. The laundry room was also reworked removing a coat closet and replacing it with a custom built-in piano hinged bench with storage underneath and coat hooks for easy access, adding a sink and tall storage cabinets. Also changing the new patio access door from the kitchen to the laundry room fits this area with double duty as a mud room. The custom perimeter cabinetry is maple finished with a Whitewash Latte Glaze complimented by the island in cherry with a Distressed Patina Stain – the laundry cabinetry matches the island bringing a pleasant flow to the space. The perimeter countertops are a polished Black Ash Granite – again using the two-toned approach – the island has a polished Ivory Chiffon and these two applications are brought together with the Durango honed backsplash and Slate Mosaic behind the range and a two-high Slate accent.
