Ten years ago this home was built with very little effort put into the design of the kitchen, the “empty nest” homeowners wanted to start new with certain parameters in mind. Design a kitchen within the existing wall space; include upscale appliances, floor to ceiling storage, implement kitchen tile backsplash and add a built-in table area. They also wanted architectural furniture details that would transform this ho-hum room into a “wow” kitchen. The designer immediately realized that the space would not accommodate a stand-alone island – they went for an elongated U-shaped kitchen.
Of the many interesting details in this space, the main focal point is the cooking area; using a 36″ Wolf gas range top with pull out pot & pan storage below and an arched wains panel English style hood above we were able to create a functional yet architecturally interesting space. Kitchen tile backsplash cost was not the point; rather it was the design aspect. Adjacent to the range top is the built-in full overlay Sub Zero refrigerator with storage above. The kitchen sink on a diagonal finishes off the work triangle. The second design focal point includes an open shelf decorative display area with a fret valance and space for the clients’ flat screen TV. The lower level table seats five comfortably and does double duty with a message center tucked in on the end.
The third area of interest would be the built in hutch between the refrigerator and pantry. This space is used as a landing area for the pantry and refrigerator; it also has architectural details that incorporate mullion glass doors, fluted pilasters and an arched toekick valance. The two cabinet tones used in the kitchen were an Heirloom stain with brown glaze on maple wood as the main finish with a creamy gold paint with glaze on the accented hutch cabinetry and open shelf fret valance wall cabinet. The design also incorporates two granite tones that complement each other and stainless steel appliances to lend a rich quality to the space. All anchored by natural finished high gloss hardwood flooring.
The kitchen tile backsplash with dark cabinets adds its own warm qualities to the room with five different tile materials that lend texture and elegance to the overall design.
