An active family wanted to better organize adjacent, yet disconnected living spaces in their home to create a “family friendly” kitchen. Extra functional storage was added using a green kitchen hutch. The designer of record has successfully implemented “two island” solutions for the past several years and therefore understood the potential value of islands as room dividers apart from their value as walk around work centers. The solution was to convert a sun porch to a quiet seating area separated from the kitchen by an island featuring the cleanup sink and dishwasher backed with a 42″ high seating area. At right angles to this room addition, an existing family room/home theater area was augmented with additional accent lighting then separated from the new kitchen with a peninsula display and cookbook library room divider cabinet. Spanning the space between the TV area and the kitchen is a dining area for twelve (the wife’s head count for special holiday gatherings.) This area is flanked on one side by tall functional pantry storage cabinets, an antique green kitchen hutch, and on the other by a wonderful entertaining area featuring a Sub-Zero # 427RG-RH wine storage unit and Sub-Zero #315I ice machine.
The kitchen is a great 21st Century interpretation of the elegant simplicity of the late 19th Century Arts and Crafts movement melded with 1940’s furniture styling. Custom designed mahogany cabinets house the #736TC-LH Sub-Zero built in refrigeration system, the Wolf microwave #WMC24 and Wolf warming drawer #WD30. The cabinetry further has been used to create a custom wood hood with a figured veneer frieze over the Wolf #DF606DG 60″ range. The center kitchen island features a great centrally placed trough sink which serves not only as a work station but as a beverage chilling area perfect for those big parties. The warm mellow mahogany is highlighted by a mosaic “hip” Oceanside tile mosaic specified for the wall surfaces surrounding the hood and in the entertaining area as well. The overall room is finished with a scene controlled low-voltage lighting system, which illuminates the space quite differently for the wide variety of family gatherings planned, from those quiet family dinners at home to special “gourmet adventures” the home owners love to embark upon in their new kitchen.
