Colorful Kitchen Backsplash in Wilmington, Delaware

The client’s wanted to transform their original kitchen to suit their current lifestyle, with a colorful kitchen backsplash of course! The kitchen solution was to recreate a three-sectioned working kitchen: the sink area, the refrigerator and food storage area and an angled island artfully designed to conceal the support column needed to transition from an eight-foot ceiling to the great room vaulted ceiling.

The family still enjoys contemporary styling – but wanted a warm “eclectic” contemporary space. They hoped for a “punch” of color, which is where the colorful backsplash idea came into play. The overall design solution features elegant cherry and black detailed cabinets inspired by the late 19th century “Biedermeier” styling from Europe. The cabinets feature beautifully detailed matched veneer around the refrigerator – which is “center stage” from all viewing angles of the room. These detailed cabinets are repeated at the sink area as well. The cabinetry transitions into a simpler veneer door style on the angled island, which is finished off with a tall matte black pedestal cabinet anchoring a turned post, which provides the ceiling support.

The “game room” portion of the space introduces yet another cabinet style that is highlighted with hand-carved pyramid pegs in a darker wood. The contemporary nature of the fireplace is redefined from the brick fireplace into a sculptural element now finished with a glass tile and a custom made stainless steel mantle. The owner added flamed copper furniture to provide a table area.

The kitchen designer continued to explore the use of unusual materials by combining granite countertops with yet another mosaic (iridescent blue, taupe, rust and grey) glass tile splash, then finished with an imported lava 42″ HIGH stone countertop: called Pyrolave. Much like the kitchen of 17 years ago, the new space continues to be ergonomically sound and well-designed from a planning stand point with state of the art Sub-Zero, Viking, Asko and Franke appliances. The partial octagon shape of the space ties the rear decks together well while providing a panoramic view of new landscaping through the floor to ceiling windows. A new front entry included the addition of a small porch finished with the same plaster texture and stonework found on the houses facade.
